1. Is the water softener certified to current Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) assuring you
full water flow in your home?

2 Bathrooms — 17 gallons per minute (GPM)
2.5 Bathrooms — 19.5 GPM
3 Bathrooms — 22 GPM
It is critical that water softeners be properly sized for home installation. The softener must be able to soften water at the minimum UPC flow rate for your home. Water softeners that do not meet UPC requirements may restrict the flow of water in your home. Inadequate flow rates can cause a problem called "bleed–through" where some "hard" water is allowed through the system, defeating the purpose of the system itself. Ensure the water softener is rated to provide an adequate water flow rate based on current UPC requirements. Also confirm all water softener pipes, connections and valves have a minimum diameter of one inch and water flow rates are measured in gallons-per-minute (GPM).
WARNING: Many well-known companies sell water softeners that are not certified to Uniform Plumbing Codes. (Culligan, GE, Whirlpool, ECO Water, Avion, Kinetico, Rainsoft, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) Search for the water softener company in the IAPMO Directory and always ask for the service flow rates in writing. Certified water softeners will have active IAPMO records (NOT CANCELLED).

2. Is the water softener validated to NSF 44 standards for water softening performance?
NSF-44 Validation and Certification – Water Softening Safety & Capacity
Consumers should look for a mark indicating conformance to ANSI/NSF Standard 44 when verifying the water softener flow rate. The NSF-44 Certification tests a variety of critical water softener characteristics including:
Material Safety - Establishes all materials in contact with drinking water leach no contaminants or dangers chemicals.
Pressure Drop – Ensures the water softener does not significantly decrease water pressure at the rated service flow.
Exchange Capacity – Ensures the water softener provides the total softening capacity as stated by the manufacturer.
Softening Performance – Ensures the water softener provides the softening capacity at stated service flow rates.
Rinse Effectiveness – Ensures the water softener does not permit excessive levels of salt into the household water supply.
Brine System Accuracy – Ensures the water softener does not use more or less salt than stated by the manufacturer.
Structural integrity – Tests the operating reliability of the water softener over 100,000 operating cycles and pressure tests.

3. Is the water softener validated to NSF 42 standards for chlorine and particulate removal?
NSF-42 Validation and Certification – Drinking Water Treatment
The NSF-42 standard covers systems designed to reduce specific aesthetic contaminants (chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates) that may be present in public or private drinking water. Most water softeners do not remove contaminants and therefore do not require NSF-42 certification. However, Jason’s Water Systems water softeners also remove chlorine from up to 400,000 gallons of water and are fully certified to ANSI/NSF-42 standards.
